Saxapahaw is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated area in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is share of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,648 at the 2010 census.
The Former Saxapahaw Spinning Mill and James Monroe Thompson House are listed upon the National Register of Historic Places. The say Saxapahaw is from the Catawban /sak’yápha:/, which is composed of /sak/ (“hill”) and /yápha:/ (“step”).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.3 km), of which 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2) is home and 0.35 square miles (0.9 km), or 6.01%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,418 people, 541 households, and 399 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 270.1 people per square mile (104.3/km2). There were 577 housing units at an average density of 109.9 per square mile (42.4/km).
