Liberty is a city in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. It is part of the Greenville–Mauldin–Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was chartered upon March 2, 1876.

How exactly Liberty got its publish has been a source of debate greater than the years. There are no genuine historical accounts of why Liberty was unlimited the publicize it was. The most popular—though probably mythical—story in the region of the explanation the Place was named Liberty was put forth by Mrs. Annie Craig in 1936: “At the close of the Revolutionary conflict a religious meeting was mammal held at a church near to a spring near the gift town of Liberty subsequent to the word came that Cornwallis had surrendered and the colonies had gained their independence. This church was named Liberty and it and the spring were located just over where the cemetery is now located, hence the make known Liberty.”

Some have claimed that Liberty was later named Salubrity Springs, but was renamed Liberty in the late 19th century. References to early house records, however, suggests that such is not the case. While there are many chronicles that speak to to the area as Liberty Spring, there are no private or authenticated documents that contain a mention to Salubrity Spring. The first citation to Salubrity comes from the declare of a farm purchased by the Rev. Allen Fuller, Universalist, in 1837. In 1839, Mr. Fuller set stirring a broadcast office in his home, naming it Salubrity Post Office. This state office remained in operation until February, 1876, three years after the first credited Liberty publicize office was established in 1873. Once the town of Liberty was chartered Tiny more than a month after the Salubrity herald office closed, the declare Salubrity became little more than a memory.

Liberty today sits upon land that was next part of the Cherokee Indians’ hunting ground. The Otarre, or Lower Hill Cherokees, had several booming villages along the riverbanks in the area; perhaps the most notable example instinctive the village of Keowee, located near the futuristic day Oconee and Pickens County line. Cherokee tribesmen, who often survived by growing crops, and tended to stir in little villages, were in many ways more domesticated than extra Native American tribes. The Cherokee as well as hunted game, believing that the foothills were a sacred hunting dome for deer, buffalo, and further large animals.
