Purcell was founded in 1887. It was named after Edward B. Purcell, a vice president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad (ATSF). Purcell was at the north subside of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, owned by the ATSF. Amtrak still serves the town behind the Heartland Flyer at the station near the dated Santa Fe depot.
