Altmar is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 407 at the 2010 census.
The former Village of Altmar (formerly “Sand Bank” and now dissolved) is in northern share of the Town of Albion at State Route 13 and County Route 22. Altmar is the chair of the town government.
The community was first fixed in 1813 by Peter Henderson. The village was incorporated in 1876 as “Sand Bank.” In 1890, the population was 551.
On November 10, 2010, residents of Altmar voted to invalidate their village’s government below Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Government Reorganization and Citizen Empowerment Act, becoming the first village to complete so under the act; the margin was a mere six votes. The village board had until May 31, 2011 to draft a objective to end the village’s government.
