Gratz is a house rule-class city in Owen County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 89 at the 2000 census. The population in 2010 was 78.
The gift city was laid out in 1847 upon land supposedly owned by the heirs of Sen. John Brown and was probably named for his grandson B. Gratz Brown, who far ahead became a senator from and governor of Missouri and made a unsuccessful vice-presidential bid in 1872 afterward Horace Greeley of the Liberal Republicans.
The town was incorporated in either 1861 or 1881.
Before the lock and dam system was built upon the Kentucky River, Gratz was one of the most prosperous towns in the Place due to the event of portaging goods in balance to an unnavigable part of the river (Lock #2 is just stirring river at Lockport). Goods were then ferried across the river and transported up KY 22 to Pleasureville, which had a railroad depot.
