Chesapeake is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,336 at the 2020 census. The town is situated on the Kanawha River. Chesapeake was incorporated on November 1, 1948 as recorded in Book 67 Page 123-124 and named for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which has served the community previously 1873. It is with the hometown of NFL performer Chris Massey, long snapper for the St. Louis Rams. The current Mayor of Chesapeake is Jack Lavender.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.64 square miles (1.66 km), of which 0.48 square miles (1.24 km2) is home and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km) is water.
At the 2010 census there were 1,554 people, 691 households, and 425 families thriving in the town. The population density was 3,237.5 inhabitants per square mile (1,250.0/km). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,685.4 per square mile (650.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 88.7% White, 9.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% from further races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5%.
Of the 691 households 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living similar to them, 38.9% were married couples vibrant together, 18.4% had a female householder in imitation of no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder similar to no wife present, and 38.5% were non-families. 33.6% of households were one person and 14.3% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average relatives size was 2.84.
