Markham, Texas is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matagorda County, Texas, United States. Named in 1903 for Charles H. Markham, a railroad engineer for Southern Pacific (and forward-looking President of the Illinois Central Railroad), the town was founded in 1901 as Cortes. In 1914, it was a designated End on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad.
Markham is located at 28°57′47″N 96°4′4″W / 28.96306°N 96.06778°W (28.962944, -96.067712).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total Place of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km), all of its land. Markham lies southwest, approximately 90 miles or 1+1⁄2-hour drive to downtown Houston. Gulf coast Palacios Bay lies 22 miles southwest of Markham.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,138 people, 386 households, and 306 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 497.5 people per square mile (191.9/km2). There were 446 housing units at an average density of 195.0/sq mi (75.2/km). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.88% White, 9.93% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 7.91% from further races, and 2.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 36.03% of the population.
