Liberty is a town in DeKalb County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 367 at the 2000 census and 310 in 2010. Liberty’s main street was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 as the Liberty Historic District.
Liberty was settled circa 1797 by Adam Dale, an American Revolutionary War veteran from Maryland who built a mill upon Smith Fork Creek.
Much of Main Street in Liberty is included in an historic district listed upon the National Register of Historic Places. Properties in the historic district count the Liberty High School, built from limestone quarried in the area, and the Salem Baptist Church and cemetery.
On the evening of March 23, 1889, Liberty was hit by a tornado that uprooted trees and caused extensive damage to homes. A local church was definitely destroyed. According to records, there were no fatalities reported.
