According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km), of which 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2) is house and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km) (2.4%) is water.
Just outside Union Dale is the North Knob of Elk Mountain. It is the highest point in Eastern Pennsylvania, as competently as in the Allegheny Plateau.
