Pen Argyl (; Pennsylvania Dutch: Kleiberg) is a borough in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The borough’s population was 3,510 as of the 2020 census.
Pen Argyl is located 26 miles (42 km) north of Allentown. It is ration of the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area, which had a population of 861,899 and was the 68th most populous metropolitan area in the U.S. as of the 2020 census.
In 1853, Joseph Kellow discovered slate in the surrounding area, coining what is now known as the Slate Belt community. The proclaim Pen Argyl originated from the Cornish declare meaning “head” and the Anglo-Saxon broadcast of Slate Rock, meaning “argylite”. With the surge of quarrymen from Cornwall and England, the town expanded. Today, there is yet one slate quarry in operation. Pen Argyl was once home to Lehigh & New England Railroad’s main freight yard and keep complex. The railroad’s roundhouse and shop building yet stand just west of town along Pennsylvania Ave.
In 1900, 2,784 people lived in Pen Argyl, and in 1910, 3,967 people lived here. The population was 3,595 at the 2010 census.
