Greenville is a borough with house rule status in northwestern Mercer County, Pennsylvania, United States. Located along the Shenango River, it lies on the order of 80 miles from both Pittsburgh and Cleveland. It is 1.89 square miles in area, and had a population of 5,541 as of the 2020 census.
Incorporated as the Borough of West Greenville in 1836, it misused its name to the Borough of Greenville in 1865 and began to operate under a house rule charter upon January 1, 2020, under the reveal of the “Town of Greenville.” The pedigree of the name is speculated to have come from East Greenville, Pennsylvania. Greenville is ration of the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area, and was designated a financially maltreated municipality in 2002 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
