Macksburg is a village in Washington County, Ohio, United States, along the West Fork of Duck Creek. The population was 186 at the 2010 census. The village is more or less 28 miles south of Cambridge Ohio.
In 1860, an oil seep in the area of Duck Creek (Ohio) led to the discovery of oil at a depth of 59 feet, on William Rayley’s farm. The resulting Macksburg Oil Field became one of Ohio’s first oil fields. The subsequent oil boom peaked in 1886, but production had ceased by 1900.
A herald office called Macksburg(h) has been in operation in the past 1873. The post may be derived from McIntosh, the make known of a village merchant.
