Ryder is a city in Ward County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 108 at the 2020 census. It is share of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area. Ryder was founded in 1906.
North Dakota’s first oil strike occurred in Ryder in 1908 when oil began seeping into a water well dug by meat market superintendent Joe Wustner in 1906. Wustner kept quiet very nearly his discovery and used the substance to fuel his kerosene lamps. Finally in 1909 he admitted publicly that he had struck oil.
Ryder is located at 47°55.0′N 101°40.4′W / 47.9167°N 101.6733°W (47.9175, -101.6738). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.34 square miles (0.88 km2), of which 0.33 square miles (0.85 km) is home and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 85 people, 42 households, and 22 families residing in the city. The population density was 257.6 inhabitants per square mile (99.5/km). There were 62 housing units at an average density of 187.9 per square mile (72.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.5% White and 3.5% Native American.
