Wainscott is a census-designated place (CDP) that just about corresponds to the hamlet past the similar name in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the South Fork of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP population was 650. The CDP was created for the 2000 census.
The hamlet was named after Wainscott, Kent, a village north of Maidstone, England, an Place immortalized in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations and from which most of the prematurely settlers of East Hampton came.
The Wainscott School, founded in 1730, was the last public one-room schoolhouse full of zip in New York until an annex was built in 2008.
Wainscott faces the Atlantic Ocean to the south. On its west is the village of Sagaponack, and upon the east is the village of East Hampton.
