Laurel is a census-designated place (CDP) roughly corresponding to the hamlet of Laurel in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located mostly within the Town of Southold, with a little portion in the Town of Riverhead. The population was 1,394 at the 2010 census.
The area was originally known as the “Middle Ground” between Southold and Riverhead. Later it was called Franklinville, but relinquished that post for Laurel due to a achievement of names behind another Franklinville.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total Place of 3.1 square miles (8.0 km), of which 3.0 square miles (7.8 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km), or 2.39%, is water.
