Upper Fruitland is located at 36°43′18″N 108°17′51″W / 36.72167°N 108.29750°W (36.721801, -108.297400).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total Place of 7.8 square miles (20.2 km), of which 7.5 square miles (19.4 km2) is land and 0.3 square mile (0.8 km) (3.98%) is water.
Upper Fruitland should not be confused with Fruitland, which is located across the San Juan River. Upper Fruitland is inside the boundaries of the Navajo Reservation, whereas Fruitland is not.
