Plainwell is a city in Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,804 at the 2010 census.

Plainwell is located on M-89 just east of its junction taking into account US 131. The city of Otsego is about three miles (4.8 km) to the west. The city of Kalamazoo is virtually ten miles (16 km) to the south, and the city of Grand Rapids is more or less thirty five miles (56 km) to the north. The Kalamazoo River flows through the center of the city and it is known as “The Island City”.

This share of Michigan was granted in the 1830s, after the removal of indigenous people. Allegan County was organized in 1835, and the Plainwell area was granted soon after. It was upon a stagecoach route from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids, and highly developed the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad was constructed along the thesame route. After the advent of the automobile, U.S. Route 131 was created and rule through the town. In the 1960s, an enlarged 4-lane US-131 was built west of town to border Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, with an interchange upon M-89 amongst Plainwell and Otsego. This allowed the town to become a nice of “bedroom community” for Kalamazoo or the southern share of Grand Rapids.

The city is house to a local JBS meat doling out plant that employs 1,300 workers, On April 20, 2020, the reforest reported 60 cases and 1 death from COVID-19 during the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. On April 27, 2020, 86 employees were reported to have been contaminated with COVID-19. The forest remains admittance with safety precautions acknowledged such as
others wearing face masks and installed plexiglas together with people who put on an act shoulder to shoulder.
