Gilman is a city in Douglas Township, Iroquois County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,738 at the 2020 census.
Gilman is located in the western part of the county at the intersection of three major highways: Interstate 57, U.S. Route 24, and U.S. Route 45. As a result, it has been named “The City of the Crossroads”. Amtrak, the national passenger rail service, provides help at the Gilman station. Gilman is 13 miles (21 km) west of Watseka, the Iroqouis county seat; 39 miles (63 km) east of Chenoa and Interstate 55; 49 miles (79 km) north of Champaign; and 87 miles (140 km) south of Chicago.
According to the 2010 census, Gilman has a total area of 2.25 square miles (5.83 km), of which 2.23 square miles (5.78 km2) (or 99.11%) is estate and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km) (or 0.89%) is water.
Gilman was laid out in the fall of 1857 on land belonging to E.D. Hundley, Judge John Chamberlain (24 October 1803 – 16 December 1866), and three Methodist ministers: Walter C. Palmer, Joseph Hartwell, and John Dempster. Hundley, who was from Virginia, left Illinois for the South at the outbreak of the Civil War. The three ministers, who had been unqualified their land by Mr. Cassady of Danville, played no other role in the progress of the town.
