Dix is a village in Jefferson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mount Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Dix is located in northern Jefferson County at 38°26′26″N 88°56′33″W / 38.44056°N 88.94250°W (38.440676, -88.942463). Illinois Route 37 is the village’s Main Street, leading south 9 miles (14 km) to Mount Vernon, the county seat, and north 13 miles (21 km) to Salem. Interstate 57 passes through the western side of the village, with access from Exit 103. I-57 leads south 7 miles (11 km) to Interstate 64 at Mount Vernon and north 55 miles (89 km) to Interstate 70 at Effingham.
According to the 2010 census, Dix has a total Place of 2.1 square miles (5.44 km), of which 2.09 square miles (5.41 km2) (or 99.52%) is house and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km) (or 0.48%) is water. Dix is located on high sports ground that marks the boundary with the enormous Muddy River and its tributary, Casey Creek.
Today Dix is an exit on Interstate 57, a major north/south roadway. When it was founded, however, it was upon the Goshen Road, which was the main east/west road in Illinois, running from Old Shawneetown upon the Ohio River to close East St. Louis on the Mississippi.
