Harwich Port (also spelled Harwichport) is a little seaside community and census-designated place (CDP) situated along Nantucket Sound in the town of Harwich in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. It is named after the harbor of Harwich in Essex, England. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 1,644. It is a popular vacation spot upon Cape Cod and is house to the Wychmere Beach Club and the Allen Harbor Yacht Club. Also, one of its popular mottos is “Three Harbors, One Port”, referencing to Saquatucket, Wychmere, and Allen Harbor, which are everything located in Harwich Port. Well known residents swell Bill O’Brien, head coach and general officer of the Houston Texans.
Harwich Port is located in the southeastern ration of the town of Harwich at 41°40′5″N 70°4′9″W / 41.66806°N 70.06917°W. It is bordered by Nantucket Sound to the south, Northwest Harwich to the west, Harwich Center to the north, East Harwich to the northeast, and the town of Chatham to the east. Saquatucket and Wychmere Harbors are located in Harwich Port. Neighboring Allen Harbor, while having a Harwich Port mailing address, is located in the Northwest Harwich CDP.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total Place of 3.5 square miles (9.0 km). 2.6 square miles (6.8 km2) of it is estate and 0.85 square miles (2.2 km) of it (24.19%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,809 people, 1,000 households, and 485 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 265.6/km2 (688.1/mi). There were 2,279 housing units at an average density of 334.6/km2 (866.9/mi). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.73% White, 0.61% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.77% from supplementary races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population. During the summer the population all but doubles with the influx of tourists.
