Bethany is a town in southern Brooke County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 756 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Weirton–Steubenville metropolitan area. It is best known as the house of Bethany College, a private broadminded arts intellectual that was the first institution of higher education in what is now West Virginia.
Scotch-Irish minister Alexander Campbell time-honored a say office in the are of his homestead all but 1827. In 1840, he founded Bethany College, and next platted the town in 1847. The town was most likely was named after the biblical town of Bethany, where Jesus was said to have raised Lazarus of Bethany from the dead.
The Bethany Historic District was listed upon the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Located within the district are the separately listed Alexander Campbell Mansion, Delta Tau Delta Founders House, Old Bethany Church, Old Main, and Pendleton Heights.
