Kandiyohi ( KAN-dee-YOH-hy) is a city in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 491 at the 2010 census.
Kandiyohi was laid out in 1869, when the railroad was outstretched to that point. In 1869 the Minnesota legislature voted Kandiyohi to be the other state capital due to its central location. The relation was vetoed by superintendent William Rainey Marshall on the grounds that “he western treeless districts” further out from Kandiyohi would place the capital away from the likely population center.
Kandiyohi was derived from a Sioux broadcast meaning “where the buffalo fish come from”.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.34 square miles (0.88 km), all land. Including five family-friendly parks.
